Well, I know I’m always talking about shopping for home furnishings at thrift stores and estate sales. But did you know that you can buy decorative displays and fixtures that department stores are no longer using?
I found that out a few years ago when I was at a mall in Birmingham, Alabama. I was passing by an upscale clothing boutique called Gus Mayer and saw a sign in the window announcing that it had store fixtures for sale. The store was relocating to another area of the mall and needed to sell off its old displays before moving.
Well, I had always admired the interior design of the store, so I was anxious to get in there and see what they had. I bought this urn for $40. If I had bought it somewhere else, it would have cost between $300 and $400.

I also bought a few batches of dried flowers and horsetail bamboo for $2. The store also had vases, shelving, paintings, and other kinds of wall hangings for sale. And then it dawned on me. Buying used store fixtures was a great option for anyone wanting to create a stylish home décor on a dime.
For example, an acquaintance of mine once bought an old trunk from another department store for very little money. She eventually used the trunk as a side table.
Other store fixtures are really practical. For instance, if you like to sew, you can buy an old mannequin and use it as a dressmaker’s dummy.

I once went shopping at a store that sold balsamic vinegars and olive oils, and I saw that the interior designers for the store had taken old wooden doors and used them as wall displays. I thought the designers were so clever to think of that, and that if I had bought those old doors, I could have used them as wall displays or as headboards at my house.
By the way, while I was at Gus Mayer, I also bought this nice display sign for Cole Haan shoes.

Think you’d like to buy thrifted store fixtures? Ask the store manager if and when they plan to sell their used displays. Hey, it never hurts to ask, and you might end up with some very chic items that you can use to decorate your home or office.
