Last month I got the opportunity to shop at several thrift stores in New York City.

I was in town for the Vogue Kitting Live conference, and while I was in the Big Apple, I decided to use my free time to go thrift shopping. Happily, a good friend of mine who’s also a knitter was able to join me. So we got bus and subway passes for the week and hit the stores between conference sessions.

But let me tell you, it was cold in New York City that week. No. It was freezing that week. But my friend and I soldiered on and shopped anyway. Here's what happened:

One afternoon, she and I took the bus to New York’s Upper West Side to 72nd Street. Then we walked to 74th Street to a store called More & More Antiques. We looked around and saw a lot of very pretty antique jewelry. I didn’t buy anything though and decided to keep shopping.

One of the most interesting stores we visited was a place called Boutique Off Broadway on 139 West 72nd St. It’s a consignment store, but it also has a regular retail store in the front of the building. The consignment section of the store carries a lot of coats, including fur, vintage and consignment clothing, hats, vintage jewelry and other accessories

In the consignment section, I found a Christian Dior mohair and silk hobo sweater for $175 that had been regular $1,100.

Then we went to a charity thrift store on 74th Street called Housing Works. It’s the thrift store where I found my cashmere coat last year.

Housing Works is a fabulous store. We looked at the clothes and furniture, but I still didn’t see anything I wanted. So we went to the Housing Works store in Chelsea. The store in Chelsea sells a lot of bohemian chic clothing, a style that I’ve always liked.

Since we were already in Chelsea, we decided to go by the Salvation Army Thrift Store in the area.

Success!

I spotted a gray, cotton hoodie from Anthropologie that was on sale for $6.99. Originally it was $88 at the department store.  It had an embroidered design on the front, which I liked. I thought the hoodie would look great with a pair of blue jeans.

Another day, my friend and I shopped at a couple of Goodwill Thrift stores. One of the stores we visited was on the Upper West Side.

I was looking around the store and saw this woman carrying a silk blouse that had a velvet trim. I told her that I wished I had seen it first, and we both laughed about that.

But, check out this $500 Chloe handbag. Chloe bags are sold at high-end stores like Neiman Marcus and can cost more than $2,000.

During one of our shopping trips, my friend and I stopped and had coffee with a New Yorker who was attending the same knitting convention. We talked for quite a while, and eventually the conversation turned to thrift stores.

She told us that she liked shopping thrift stores, too. Then she stood up and walked to her bedroom. When she came back a couple of minutes later, she was carrying a classic dress suit – skirt and jacket – that she bought at a local thrift store 20 years ago. She said it was still one of her favorite outfits.

When you can find a pre-loved, thrift store outfit that’s affordable and durable, that’s the best!

So that was my New York City thrift shopping trip. I’ll tell you all about the Vogue Knitting Live conference in my next post. Bye!
