If you’ve got kids, or if you’re a college student, you know how expensive school supplies can be. But did you know that you can save  money by shopping at thrift stores? An awesome, back-to-school thrift store haul is possible.

For example, at a thrift store you can buy gently-used threads for kids like shirts, pants, and skirts for as little as $2 a piece and second hand coats and jackets for less than $10. Even if your child’s school requires a uniform, you can purchase plain white or blue shirts and dark pants for less than $5 each.

And don’t forget about socks, stockings, leggings, and underwear. Department stores often donate unsold packages of socks and other items like these to thrift stores.

If you’re a cash-strapped college student, you can purchase armloads of cheap, thrift store clothing, including designer jeans, slacks, dresses, skirts, shirts, ties, and t-shirts, for very little money. Earrings and necklaces can cost as little as 59 cents, and pre-loved handbags and men’s and women’s shoes can be purchased for less than $10.

Besides clothing, have you ever considered buying backpacks from a resale thrift store? Most of the time, the resale stores only have a few backpacks in stock, so if you see one that looks good, go ahead and buy it to save yourself some money.

Thrift stores also sell used textbooks, old magazines like National Geographic, Cliffs Notes, classic novels, and reference books. I’ve also come across unopened packages of markers and ballpoint pens, binders, thermoses, and cloth lunch bags at resale stores.

Looking for cheap dorm room decorating ideas? The thrift store is one of the best places to find what you need to fix up your space.

I was in a second hand store recently and saw computer desks and office chairs that were less than $100, and they were already assembled! The store also had attractive desk lamps for $4.99 each.

If you need bed sheets and comforters for your dorm room or college apartment, listen to this. Recently, I was online looking at a popular retailer’s website, and I found out that they were selling a luxury brand of Egyptian cotton bed sheets, 600 thread count, for $135! But a few weeks earlier, I had thrifted a package of Egyptian cotton sheets that had a 1,500 thread count for around eight bucks!

Now that was deal! Sheets with larger thread counts feel smoother and are more luxurious than those with lower thread counts.

Want to find deals like that? Then join me on my Summer/Back-to-School Thrift Shopping Tour in Birmingham, Alabama on Saturday, Aug. 3. But hurry. You have until Friday, July 19 to R.S.V.P. (Click on the link for details.)
