Did you know that January is the best time to thrift shop? It's especially true if you shop at charity-run thrift stores. That’s because during this time of year, thrift stores are often loaded down with donated items from people and major retailers seeking end-of-the-year tax write offs.
While a lot of people go to thrift stores to drop off their pre-loved clothing and housewares, large discount and high-end department stores will donate brand new merchandise. Often the merchandise includes returned or clearance items that have never been worn or used before. So, if you prefer new or unopened thrift store merchandise over gently-used stuff, now is the best time to hit the thrift stores.
When I’ve gone to thrift stores in January and February, I’ve snagged brand new pillow cases and bed sheets that were still in the plastic packages. I’ve also purchased new sets of bath and kitchen towels.
But my favorite thing to shop for in January is clothing and accessories! I’ve gone to secondhand stores and bought new suits, dresses, separates, coats, shoes, hats, purses and jewelry that originally came from stores like Chico’s, Belk, Saks Fifth Avenue, Target and T.J. Maxx.
Hint: A lot of the clothing will still have the department store price tags on them.

Some bookstores donate merchandise to thrift stores. So at the beginning of the year, you might see multiple copies of popular bestsellers on the shelves at thrift stores. You may also find Bibles and religious books by authors like Joel Osteen and Rick Warren, author of “The Purpose Driven Life.”
Other than books, people also give away tons and tons of magazines to secondhand stores in December as well as old textbooks, cookbooks, paperback novels, and nonfiction books. You also can find a lot of decorating and crafting books, too.
I’ve also discovered a few January “surprises” at charity thrift stores. One time, my husband and I counted 125 cans of paint at one local Goodwill store. It was $4,000-$5,000 worth of paint that was selling for $75! That was enough paint to cover several houses!
